Getting Closer to Confirmation of the Real World House

By Andrew Wiseman on Jun 7, 2009

We're getting tantalizingly close to confirming that the house for MTV's The Real World is, in fact, in Dupont Circle. We had heard numerous tips that 2000 S Street NW was the place, but without much solid evidence to back those claims. Yesterday afternoon, we walked over the much-talked about house, which is located at the corner of 20th and S. There were construction people working on the exterior -- when asked what was going on there, one worker said "we're building a house, I dunno who lives there." When asked if it was related to MTV, he frowned.

DCist then popped in at the TD Commerce bank next door, which happened to be open. A teller said that yesterday a woman from the cleaners just south of the house on S Street said that "[MTV] were moving in."

There were a number of men working on the house, and two white vans were parked outside, including one rental van. Parking meters around the house on both S and 20th Streets had red bags over them with signs featuring a DC flag, reading "No Parking/Car will be towed/24 hours a day/7 days a week/without permit" featuring no expiration. The signs didn't resemble the usual temporary No Parking signs, which we see put up in advance of big events around town -- they appear to be more permanent.

The house itself is quite large, taking up the entire corner, and has entrances on both streets. The basement and first floor windows have brown paper covering them, and there were a few signs for the construction company, but that's about it. Windows on the upper levels of the property were uncovered, but little could be ascertained as to what was inside from street level. Additionally, a very large satellite antenna had been set up on the roof of the building.

Be sure to check back this week for updates as we gather further information.

Ugh - there goes my neighborhood. I can't imagine that the few remaining local hangouts will survive unscathed.

Remember when MTV showed, y'know, music?

MTV has showed regular programming for longer than it played music.

Do you really think that you'll notice 8 more dingleberries living in the city? I doubt it. Though there could be some locals trying to hone in on where they're hanging out (which will surely be 18th St - maybe a couple places on U).

On the bright side, maybe a few local restaurants will get a shot in the arm with an appearance. And it's arguably the prettiest house they've ever used for the show - we can take some small local pride in that, I guess.

It will be fairly easy to find out where they hang out; because you will have to sign a release before you can enter the bar or restaurant if they are filming. Good time ahead!

On the West side of the circle, natch.
Say, think they'll crash any embassy parties?

sigh...just let me be person #202234935 to say "there goes the neighborhood!"
