Bomb Threat, Suspicious Package Investigations Downtown
A pair of large police and emergency responses to report going on downtown today.
The first is a suspicious package investigation in the mailroom of a World Bank building. Around noon, D.C. Fire/EMS responded to a call of a package delivered to the World Bank, located at 1818 H Street NW, that contained an unusual or suspicious substance, according to spokesperson Pete Piringer. There have been no reports of illnesses, but the building was partially evacuated while crews worked to identify the substance.
The second is a bomb threat investigation at the building that houses the Washington Passport Agency, located at 1111 19th Street NW. MPD responded to the threat at around 1:15 p.m. and are currently on the scene there. They've blocked off the area to pedestrian traffic while the building is searched. We'll update when we have more.

Typical overkill. A bunch of DC's finest sitting around for the past hour blocking both sides of the street off to pedestrians. I can see maybe closing the side of the street with the Passport Office, but both sides are a little extreme.
you have to protect Smith & Wollensky.
Steak is often an innocent victim.
What kind of moron actually thinks it's a good idea for the MPD or ANY law enforcement agency to let people walk anywhere near a building with a package that could be an explosive device?! And if it's an explosive....is the glass being blown out at several hundred miles an hour supposed to stop before it gets across the street? What if there turn out to be multiple devices as has been the case many times over the past several years? Of course the MPD is going to sit/stand there and prevent people from walking through...what do you expect them to do while they're there.....sing and dance for you? You know what....I'd be just fine if they let hoya91 take his chance walking through a potential bomb blast radius. Tell them how you pay their salary and you will file a complaint and "have their badge"...that will get them to let you through. You're just the kind of idiot they're protecting.
Oh noes! An abandoned cardboard box! Cordon off the entire block!
Never mind all of those abandoned multi-ton metal boxes right next to the sidewalk. They're just parked cars. And who ever heard of a car-bomb?
And never mind that any random dude wearing a bulky coat is about as likely to be a bomb, too.
It's all CYA security theater: making a big show of responding to "suspicious packages", so that when something does go 'boom', the powers-that-be can say "but we did everything we could."
When is someone going to report that SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE IN MONKEY'S PANTS?!?!
Get back on the codpiece Liz.
Just because I wear a fake moustache/nose/eyeglass combo on my junk doesn't mean it's "suspicious." By that rationale, you'd have to arrest every CIA operative in Langley. And who would you get to beam subliminal microwave instructions into your brain then? The NSA? Good luck with that. They can barely send coded instructions to your dog to lick his balls.
