Fall Leaf Collections Start This Week
The D.C. Department of Public Works began its fall leaf collection period this week, so if you've got a lot of leaves to deal with around your house, it's worth a reminder how this works. First things first, head to http://leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/ and search for your address on the DPW leaf collection status map. The map will return a list of of scheduled leaf collection periods for your area. Take a note of the dates, and then before your next scheduled pass begins, rake all the leaves in front of your house and sidewalk into a pile in the nearest tree box. DPW crews will then come around and vacuum them up. And if you think you might have been missed, make sure to call 311 to request additional leaf removal service.

Thanks Sommer for the reminder! We might actually get our leaves raked up this year in time for this. Sending to the housematies now. yar.
This is one of DC's better run services, since it generally works as they say it will. I'm a bit puzzled this year, though, because the brochure arrived only yesterday, the first day of leaf collection. For some people leaves were supposed to have been raked out by Sunday, for collection Monday.
My other beef with the process is that the two-week windows are too wide. I've found in past years that few leaves are down by the first window, and then by the second window they've been down for a while, which means the leaves have been sitting or blowing for a couple of weeks at least, as there's no predicting when they'll come during the two weeks. (No, the online GIS tracker doesn't really show that).
