Metro Warns to Plan for Underground Rail Service Only

By Sommer Mathis on Feb 5, 2010

It hasn't happened yet, but WMATA is warning residents to be mindful that Metrorail and Metrobus service will be significantly impacted by this weekend's storm. We'll be monitoring the transit situation closely as the storm progresses, and will update frequently as changes are announced.

For the Metrobus system, look for changes to progress similarly to the Dec. 19 storm. Service will likely be limited to snow emergency routes only at some point this evening, and may stop all together should road conditions rapidly deteriorate. Hopefully those calls will be made before stuff like this starts to happen.

As for Metrorail, the transit system has policies in place that require a shift to underground service only once the first eight inches of snow accumulates. Once that happens (and we'll be sure to let you know when it does), refer to the Metro map below, which indicates Yellow Line service from Pentagon to Crystal City only, Red Line from Medical Center to Union Station, Orange Line from Ballston to Stadium-Armory, Green Line from Fort Totten to Congress Heights, and Blue Line from Ballston to Stadium-Armory.

If the contractors in the Logans Run Arms in Crystal City can't get to the underground sex bunkers in the Pentagon, we might as well roll out the red carpet and Astroglide for Bin Laden.

In your face, enemies of freedom!

Flashback to waiting-in-Rosslyn-for-the-train-that-never-came on 12/19.

When Metro says "Orange Line from Ballston to Stadium-Armory," -- does that mean only in the direction of Ballston to S-A, or does it mean trains run both ways (if you want to go to VA)??

Aww, that's so cute how the Yellow Line just shuttling itself between its three stops.

The blue line gets extended to Ballston during a snow emergency? I didn't know that

It does, yep.

strange that they don't run the red line from glenmont to forest glen—i mean, if they're going to do that piddly yellow line run, why not the red as well?

What I've always heard, but haven't seen anything official from Metro saying so, is that trains can be stored underground in that stretch from the Glenmont yard.....thus making it a little easier to get service up and running when the time is right.

that makes sense, thanks!

The "Widespread Panic" banner ad is very timely DCist. Bravo to the Gothamist overlords.

When I was on the metro this morning the driver (conductor?) was announcing the 8 inch policy every few stops. I thought it was a useful reminder, though I don't know how many people actually heard him.

Liz has a similar "8-inch policy." Even takes a ruler with her to make sure guys "measure up." Woe unto him who hasn't been taking their herbal cialis from their most trusted Nigerian business partner.

Is her policy right at 8" or is bigger OK?

I am known to make a few concessions. Right, OTR? (wink wink ... nod nod)

You got it sweetcheeks!

I'm going to spend my day tomorrow riding back and forth on the three stops of the Yellow Line.

Metro should really consider putting forth the extra effort to keep just the Yellow Line bridge open during snow events. It's really not a very long distance and it would make a big difference for mobility in and out of the city.

I can understand not wanting to maintain large distances of above ground track, but a bridge where there's no possibility of drifting snow, etc. should be relatively easy.

The weather guy on TV predicted 8 inches of accumulation by 11:00 tonight. So, to the extent that TV Weather Guy is accurate (I make no guarantees), we have a projection on when we're going to underground-only service.

And Metro announced they would be closing outdoor service at... 11:00 tonight. Worship me and my flawless repetition of what TV Weather Guy said!

Metro really needs to consider covering that section of track over Arlington Cemetery. Us 'southern' VA riders can't make it back into the city via rail! Ugh!!!

And, another weekend trapped in scenic downtown Silver Spring.. God, I f**king hate my life.
