Dish of the Week: Toffles
Where: Sâuçá

There are an ever-increasing number of Twittering food truck options in D.C. peddling frozen yogurt, pizza, cupcakes and the like. But my new favorite truck offerings are toffles, from the Sâuçá food truck. Toffles are a contraction of the word toffee and waffle, the toffee part being the sugar and butter mixture that is painted onto the surface of the waffle and heated to create a caramelized outer layer.

Sâuçá's toffles remind me of a waffle hut near Baker Street in London that would coat waffles in caramel and chocolate. But Sâuçá's are even better, allowing you to choose two toppings from a selection that includes strawberries, bananas, apples, caramel, Nutella, chocolate syrup, cream cheese frosting, and marshmallow fluff. For your first toffle, we recommend asking for the toppings on the side, as the caramelized outer coating may be sweet enough on its own for most people.

Sâuçá also has a complement of savory foods, and carries an impressive array of 22 different sauces to sprinkle on top of its internationally themed wrap sandwiches. And there are plans afoot to expand to an even larger selection of menu items. Next up is a grill truck with fries and burgers, and then a European truck with paninis and crepes.

Small Bites
Fruity trip
EFN Lounge hosts a flavor tripping event every second Friday of the month. The event features a berry called Synsepalum dulcificum, which is believed to temporarily alter sweet taste receptors, making everything taste sweet. The $12 ticket includes one of the berries and a menu of sour, spicy, and bitter items to test out on your "tripped out" taste buds.

Such thing as a free lunch
Roti is a new Mediterranean restaurant serving roasted meats, falafel, and other options that will be opening in April at 1747 Pennsylvania Avenue. The Chicago-based chain is hosting a contest that will allow one winner to have free lunch for a year, and ten runners up who will get one lunch a week for a year.

Dine out for life
If you happen to be dining out on March 11, 150 local restaurants will be donating a portion of their sales to Food & Friends. Food & Friends delivers food to homebound individuals with cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other life-challenging illnesses. Check the list to find out about participating restaurants and for which meals and what percentage they are donating.
