Happy Chinese New Year, D.C. Welcome to the year of the dragon, a particularly auspicious time that will supposedly provide protection, heavenly blessings and a Chinese baby boom . The District's celebration starts in Chinatown at 2 p.m. at 6th and I streets NW.

>>Despite federal investigations and criminal inquiries, the five D.C. Council incumbents running for re-election appear to have an easy path toward victory in the April 6 primary vote. Political observers note reasons including a lack of political talent to challenge the incumbents as well as an unwillingness to be associated with the council.

>>Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has a 55 percent approval rating in a recent poll. Though the number is still relatively high, constituents are concerned about his budget and tax plan as well as other initiatives. The Washington Post thinks his bill for same-sex marriage that also protects the rights of religious institutions is a well-drawn piece of legislation.

>>Oakland police arrested 300 Occupy protesters yesterday after riot-like behavior including breaking into City Hall, burning an American flag and throwing rocks and other objects at officers. Tear gas and beanbags were used to try to disperse the crowd.

>>Jimmy “Junebug” Jackson died of congestive heart failure yesterday morning; he was 55 years old. The house drummer at HR-57 was beloved by the D.C. jazz community.

>>Weather-wise, it’s been an above average January.

  • Weather-wise, it’s been an above average January.

Totally confused here. The URL says this is on the crime blog, but it's a weather story. And the headline you wrote leaves me wondering "above average in what way?" Precip, temps, 'feel-good' days?

By the calendar, every day this month has been a winter day. But few days have been wintry.

Anddd WaPo has become your terribly boring coworker.
  • For those of us who are dragons, we thank you. :-)

how about "dragon on the ground"?

It's comforting to see you are also disingenuous with non-DC Occupy coverage. That was a small group of anarchist who took city hall and burnt the flag.  How about mentioning they were trying to occupy a vacant building peacefully and were met with flash-bangs, rubber bullets, and teargas? The fence they "destroyed" was because it was the only exit after 2,000 protesters were being chased with said weapons.

Still waiting for the DCist to pull its head out of its ass.
  • FAMOUS ORIGINAL Vance Grey
they were trying to occupy a vacant building peacefully

That's burglary. It *should* be met with a swift and harsh response.

So of the five incumbents, "most appear to be coasting to the polls," yet "a few...face serious challenges."

How's that possible?  The Post really effed up they they cut their copy editors.
  • Political observers note reasons including a lack of political talent to challenge the incumbents as well as an unwillingness to be associated with the council.

So basically not only are the incumbents corrupt, there isn't a big enough pool of fresh crooks to draw from. Not only that, but the Council is so chock full of crooked morons, even the idiots who might want to run don't want to have any of that crooked stupidity rub off on them.

All this, and we wonder why we're never seriously considered for Statehood. I can't wait to see the geniuses we run for Senate.
  • Over the River
If today was last Friday, Martin would jump on me, but it is this very fact he seems to think isn't in the way of statehood. DC Government is a joke that should make you cry. And I quickly add; it makes no difference whatsoever that there are other bad governments in the country. They already are states, it isn't going to be taken away from them, so get past that. Until DC can pull its head from its ass it won't be a state.

This. As bad as Congress is, their members have gone down due to sexual indiscretions. Our elected leaders go down from stealing money from children to buy themselves SUVs.
  • Well, it's not like Congress is packed with paragons of virtue and damned intellectuals. It comes down to this: half a million District residents deserve a vote in Congress OR exemption from Federal taxation. As it is, they're screwed on both counts AND are stuck with a bunch of inept jackasses, pudding fetishists, midget hooker strangers, and reverse vampires to lord over them. Now the choice, she's a clear 'un. Count Chocula: slave of the innarests. Marvin "The Swiss Bastard" Aftermule: Servant of the Little Man.

"We are naive if we think qualified people are just going to drop out of the sky".

A bit pretentious of you Martha Mitchell, don't you think?
  • Over the River
If you stretch "qualified" to include "not dead" and "out of prison", there are plenty of people to run.
