Did you enjoy that weekend off from Metro station closures, Washington? Don't get too cozy. This weekend, WMATA is upping the ante, closing six Red Line stations beginning on Friday night at 10 p.m.
Holiday Over: Metro to Close Six Stations This Weekend
Metro to Operate on Sunday Schedule Tomorrow
While traveling out of town is the story of the day for most people, those of you who are sticking around town for the Thanksgiving holiday will want to keep in mind that Metro will be operating on a Sunday schedule this Thursday.
Statehood Ads Hit Metrobuses
A new campaign for statehood devised by Councilmember Michael A. Brown (I-At Large) was officially presented today, and you might soon see it rolling right by you.
Megabus Gets New Metro-Friendly Pickup/Drop-off Location
Remember in February, when we opined that intercity bus operator Megabus would have been better off locating their new pickup and dropoff location a "little bit closer to the Metro"? Turns out we weren't the only ones who thought so.
Ta Ta, Tourmobile
For 42 years, District residents and tourists have seen Tourmobile's signature blue and white buses drive circles around the National Mall. After today, the Tourmobile will be no more.
Ghostbuses: Who Ya Gonna Call?
This morning, we learned that WMATA was planning on installing public information displays -- kind of like the ones that tell you how soon your train is coming -- in dozens of bus shelters around the region.
Back From The Drawing Board: EOTR Circulator Meeting Tonight
DDOT will hold another community meeting regarding a new Circulator route east of the Anacostia River tonight.
Handy: WMATA's Weekend Work Schedule Through June '12
WMATA's efforts to try and improve communication with riders took another step forward today, as the transit agency released a schedule of all the major weekend track work planned through next June.
Metro Weekend Work To Affect Four Rail Lines
In case you missed it: Metro's moving forward. Of course, there's still track maintenance to take care of. This weekend, WMATA will be performing work on four of its rail system's five lines, leading to plenty of single-tracking.
Arlington Transit Buses Delayed Due To Labor Protest
WMATA isn't the only transit agency having some serious service issues this morning -- Arlington Regional Transit (ART) bus service is being hit particularly hard by a labor protest.
Maryland Police Pull Over Several Sky Express Buses
Four people were killed when a bus owned by Sky Express skidded off Interstate 95 in Virginia on May 31. After the crash, federal regulators suspended Sky Express' license -- though it's apparently not stopping them from moving its buses around area roads.
East of the River Circulator Heads Back to the Drawing Board
The idea of extending a D.C. Circulator route across the Anacostia River for the first time, which has been floating around for about 18 months, has hit a snag.
Public to Discuss First East of the River Circulator Tonight
Tonight, the District Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting to discuss expanding D.C. Circulator bus service across the Anacostia River for the first time.
Best Rap Video of All Time? Best Rap Video of All Time.
Yeah, yeah, "what is this, Louisvillest?" I hear you. But we have these bike racks in Washington, too -- and the internet belongs to all of us.
Is This The End of the Chinatown Bus?
Ah, Chinatown buses: chariots of the frugal, the thrifty, the person looking for the cheapest possible way to get up and down the Eastern Seaboard. It's almost a rite of passage to take at least one spin on the various bus lines which originate from and stop in the District -- and even with the ascent of corporate-backed, low-cost, modern-amenity lines like BoltBus and Megabus, people are still scraping out a Jackson to get to New York on the fly. But while more competition might not have sunk the dirt-cheap bus business, a new District law just might.
Metro To Roll Out 152 New Buses By Year's End
Yesterday, WMATA provided a sneak peek at the new Metro buses which will be hitting District roads by the end of the year. The 152 new buses, New Flyer Xcelsiors models, are hybrid-electric buses which feature a slightly different paint job (more silver!) and are much more like a Circulator bus than the traditional Metrobus -- plastic seats, lower floors and more durable cloth fabric on the seats. Each new bus can accommodate about 60 people, and features yellow hand loops for shorter riders to hold on to.
No Orange Line Service Between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton This Weekend
This weekend, Orange Line riders are in for yet another headache, as Metro will halt all service between Stadium-Armory and New Carrollton to perform major maintenance work.
Some Circulator Service To Change Tomorrow
A public meeting will be held tonight to discuss the long-term future of the D.C. Circulator, including a potential fare hike and the extension and creation of new routes over the next couple of years. But the D.C. Department of Transportation has instituted some more immediate changes which will go into effect tomorrow, including the termination of service along the Smithsonian-National Gallery of Art route.
Fare Increase, Service Cuts Proposed For Circulator
Big changes are in the cards for the D.C. Circulator -- that's not news. But how much will those changes cost riders? Ah, therein lies the rub. According to reports in the Examiner and Greater Greater Washington, the District Department of Transportation is considering raising fares on the red buses to $1.50 for SmarTrip users and $2 for those paying cash. It would be the first fare increase for the Circulator since the service was initiated six years ago.
Smithsonian-National Gallery of Art Circulator Route Could Be Cut
The District Department of Transportation will hold its first ever semi-annual public forum to discuss Circulator service at 6:30 p.m. on March 17. Among the topics on the agenda for the evening (aside from future expansion, of course) is a proposal to shut down the Smithsonian-National Gallery of Art route, which would, in turn, free up money to extend service on the Union Station-Navy Yard route through 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday from April to September.
What To Expect From Metro During Presidents Day Weekend
We've been talking quite a bit about other WMATA-related stories of late, but we wanted to make sure that you haven't forgotten about Metro's Year of Three-Day Weekend Closures, the next round of which is slated for this upcoming weekend. Both the Federal Triangle and Smithsonian stations will be closed for the entirety of Presidents Day weekend, between 10 p.m. on February 18 and closing on February 21.
Mapping D.C.'s Snow Emergency Routes
Last night, WMATA announced that Metrobuses, before shutting down for the evening, would operate on "emergency routes only." They repeated that this morning, when restoring service. Got it. Oh, wait: which roads, precisely, are the District's snow emergency routes? That's a very good question.
Metrobuses Shift To Emergency Routes Only
Metro announced this evening that due to developing icy conditions on local roads, Metrobuses will be operating on emergency routes only, which will certainly cause some delays on top of what is already a frightful evening, traffic-wise. If you usually catch a bus on a side street, you'll want to head over to a major road instead and budget in quite a bit of extra time.
Are You Getting Out Of Town Tonight?
If you have tickets for a Southwest flight out of Baltimore-Washington International Airport, probably not, reports Dr. Gridlock. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, who handles flights in and out of both National and Dulles, says that there have been several domestic cancellations already, with more likely as snow accumulates and visibility gets worse tonight. All airports are currently open, but people who have flights tonight should call their airlines to check on the status of their flight. Service on inter-city bus lines is also rather spotty, with many lines canceling trips tonight and tomorrow. Amtrak is running along the Northeast Corridor this evening, but has warned that tomorrow's service may be interrupted due to the weather.
WMATA Opens Up Bus Data For Public Use
Calling all developers: Metro has now given you the chance to play around with its bus data.
Annoying Talking Metrobus Pilot Program To Last "About A Year"
Remember the babel about those irritating talking Metrobuses? You know, the ones which blare "pedestrian, bus is turning" outside and "caution, look both ways" inside every time the driver turns the steering wheel? According to Metro, we should all get used to hearing it -- the announcements are part of a pilot program which started this month and is scheduled to last "about a year."
Another Bookmark For Your "Before You Leave The House" Collection
Have you ever spent time wandering aimlessly around the District, wondering about the various places you could get to within, say, 15 minutes? Well, here's something that your DCist editor has been toying around with this afternoon that should come in handy for when you find yourself in such a scenario: Mapnificent is an incredibly fun-to-play-with, dynamic tool which allows you to drop a pin anywhere on a map of D.C., specify how much time you have to spend on transit and then poof -- the map will then highlight where you can get in that amount of time, using schedules from WMATA and your answers to questions like whether or not you have a bike and how quickly you can or want to walk between Metro stations.
Suspicious Package On 14th Street NW Clogging Traffic
According to reports, 14th Street NW has been blocked off between Rhode Island Avenue and Q Street NW due to some kind of suspicious package. P Street NW between 13th and 15th Streets has also been shut down due to the investigation. The closure has caused a rather large traffic backup and has also caused Metrobuses and Circulator buses to detour around the area.
Outlining This Weekend's Columbus Day Metrorail Disruptions
Did you forget about this weekend's extensive Metrorail disruptions? Don't worry, we're here to remind you. (We're very, very sorry.) The chunk of maintenance work, which Metro is undertaking all at once -- much like they did during Labor Day weekend -- to save money and time will have a serious effect on this weekend's commuting and on Monday's rush hour. Do you have to report to the office on Monday? Better pay close attention to this list and make sure you can get to where you're going on time.
26 Injured In Silver Spring Bus Accident
WTOP reports that police have issued a speeding citation to the Metrobus driver who rear-ended another Metrobus early this morning in Silver Spring. WMATA, who has not yet identified the driver in question, says that "about" 26 people have suffered injuries as a result of the accident, and all have been transported to area hospitals. The bus that rear-ended the other bus sustained windshield and door damage.
