Farmers Market Roundup: Heard of a Potimarron?
It seems like there are an endless variety of squashes, especially winter ones. However, after watching Eric Ripert's Avec Eric show on PBS, I learned about a variety known as a potimarron or hokkaido squash. It is characterized by its bright orange color and slight, pointed top. I've found it at the Kuhn farmers stall at the 14th and U farmers market labeled as kabocha squash.
Fall Leaf Collections Start This Week
The D.C. Department of Public Works began its fall leaf collection period this week, so if you've got a lot of leaves to deal with around your house, it's worth a reminder how this works. First things first, head to http://leaf.dcgis.dc.gov/ and search for your address on the DPW leaf collection status map. The map will return a list of of scheduled leaf collection periods for your area. Take a note of the dates, and then before your next scheduled pass begins, rake all the leaves in front of your house and sidewalk into a pile in the nearest tree box. DPW crews will then come around and vacuum them up. And if you think you might have been missed, make sure to call 311 to request additional leaf removal service.
Passenger Falls on Tracks at Takoma Metro
An unidentified passenger accidentally fell onto the tracks at Takoma Metro station just before 10 a.m. this morning, Metro spokesperson Steven Taubenkibel said. According to Metro, the passenger got up off the tracks and walked away, and did not receive medical attention as far as WMATA knows. WJLA has been reporting that the incident caused the station to close 15 minutes earlier than had been originally planned, but Taubenkibel says the fall happened at 9:57 a.m., making the scenario WJLA is reporting impossible. Metro says the station closed at 10 a.m., as planned.
