Councilmember Tommy Wells Takes Bus, Eats Fruit

That's Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) in the video, taking the bus. This is part of Wells' new Rediscover the Bus campaign, aiming to look at other systems as models to improve service and thus attract new riders.

The Metrobus system cannot simply be a commuter route for getting people in and out of the city for their workday - it should provide reliable and attractive alternatives to move about our neighborhoods, support our local small businesses, and connect us to all the amenities throughout the city.

Metro Employee Safety Survey Results Are Rather Depressing

Results from a safety survey of 10,000 Metro employees were officially released this morning at a meeting of the WMATA Board's safety and security committee, and the news is not good. According to the results, nearly 2 out of every 3 of Metro workers said they had witnessed a safety violation in the past year -- but thirty percent of those violations went unreported for various reasons. When it comes to violations which were reported, alcohol and drug use on the job (37 percent of reported violations) was the most frequently named. Metrobus drivers not wearing a seatbelt or texting while driving were also big problems -- combined, those two complaints represented more than half of all violations reported by Metrobus employees to management. Even more unsettling: the 21 percent of Metro employees who indicated that they had reported a violation in the past year, but nothing was done about it. more ›

Metro logged 924 work orders to fix or maintain fareboxes in the month of May, out of 1,479 buses, the report said. That would mean 62 percent of fareboxes needed repairs, unless some broke down more than once. more ›

Bus Pins Car in Dupont Circle

Bus Pins Car in Dupont Circle

Here's a bird's eye view of an odd traffic mishap that went down in Dupont Circle at about 12:15 p.m., courtesy an alert reader. A Metrobus turning onto the circle managed to pin a car to the inner median, which our tipster tells us caused traffic to back up considerably, plus a predictable cacophony of honking. Sorry all you folks who work in the immediate area had to cope with that! more ›

Lingering Post-Storm Metrobus Confusion

Lingering Post-Storm Metrobus Confusion

DCist heard from frustrated D2 Metrobus riders over the weekend, via both Twitter and email, who complained they hadn't been made aware that the route was still not really running normally since last week's double-blizzard. The last WMATA had announced, the D1 was one of the remaining bus routes still not up and running, but they didn't say anything about the D2. So what gives? more ›

What You Really Want To Hear Right Now: Please Go Shovel

What You Really Want To Hear Right Now: Please Go Shovel

Anyone seen one of these recently? No? Me neither. When a neighbor emailed around asking whether anyone knew where the fire hydrant was buried, it occurred to me that I had no idea -- only my dog would think to notice that sort of thing. Someone else on our street remembered planting a tree nearby and did the good work of locating and shoveling out the fire hydrant. It seems beyond absurd to contemplate a fire in this weather, but snow has proved to be a serious impediment to emergency officials' ability to control blazes. more ›

Those routes will reopen once officials determine road conditions have improved. As always, consult NextBus to check on how often your bus route is running. more ›
