Metro set a new ridership record on Friday, just a day after posting a new ridership record on Thursday, ABC7 reports. On April 2, users enjoyed 891,240 trips on Metrorail, making Friday the new second highest all-time traffic day for the system. That stills fall short of the record set on the day of President Barack Obama's inauguration, when Metrorail trips eclipsed the seven-digit marker. Still, he District's riding high, having just set a record only to smash it the very next day. Howdy, Washington. That was some kind of weekend, no? No, really, that was some kind of weekend: The Washington Business Journal reports that on Thursday, Metrorail recorded nearly 878,000 trips, making it the second all-time highest traffic day in D.C. Metro history. Blame it on the brilliant weather, Cherry Blossom Festival, United and Capitals games, and comeuppance for all those days area residents spent indoors in February, but the city got out this weekend. After President Barack Obama's inauguration (which holds first place in Metrorail ridership) and the day before the inauguration (third place), this past weekend might have been one of the busiest couple days in public transit history. more ›

The Metrorail system saw a whopping 877,890 trips on Thursday, thanks to a combination of the peak of the National Cherry Blossom Festival and a sold-out Washington Capitals game. Metro says it has lifted most of the speed restrictions that were put in place on the Red Line between Friendship Heights and Bethesda late last week. Inbound Red Line trains traveling in the direction of Glenmont are now back at normal speeds, up to 59 mph. Outbound trains traveling in the direction of Shady Grove, meanwhile, are operating at 35 to 40 mph between Friendship Heights and Bethesda.
