Red Line Speed Restrictions Mostly Lifted

Metro says it has lifted most of the speed restrictions that were put in place on the Red Line between Friendship Heights and Bethesda late last week. Inbound Red Line trains traveling in the direction of Glenmont are now back at normal speeds, up to 59 mph. Outbound trains traveling in the direction of Shady Grove, meanwhile, are operating at 35 to 40 mph between Friendship Heights and Bethesda. WMATA says it hopes to have those trains back entirely to full speed by next week. more ›

Speed Restrictions in Place on the Red Line

A temporary 15 mph speed restriction is in place on the Red Line between Friendship Heights and Bethesda, WMATA has announced. The change is due to ongoing rail replacement work along that section of the tracks. The restriction has actually been in place since late last week, according to Metro, and the transit authority hopes to be able to lift them by the middle of this week. Previously scheduled weeknight and weekend track work between Medical Center and Friendship Heights will continue through this week and into the weekend, which will cause delays of between 20 and 30 minutes while inbound and outbound trains to take turns sharing the same track. more ›

Speed Restrictions Contributing to Metro Delays

Speed Restrictions Contributing to Metro Delays

The standard spiel from WMATA for the past eight months has been that the switch to manual operation after the June 22 Red Line crash has been the source of nearly all rider woes since then. Jerky stops and starts? It's the manual operation. Longer headways between trains? Related to manual operation. Overcrowded train cars when they do come? Metro is just less efficient in manual operation. more ›

WMATA put out its November track work advisories today, and it looks like Metrorail riders on most lines are in for more of the weeknight delays that made October such a joy, not to mention plenty of weekend work to contend with. Your Friendly Weekend Metro Track Maintenance Reminder

It's Thursday, which means the weekend is blissfully close. But apart from a break from the office and a chance to unwind, you know what weekends also mean: Metro track maintenance delays! This weekend's work schedule isn't as bad as recent episodes, but Red and Orange Line riders should make a note of the following potential delays. Also keep in mind that the entire Metrorail system will open at 5 a.m. on Sunday to accommodate the Marine Corps Marathon. We'll have more detailed information on the street closures that will come along with that event this weekend. more ›

Almost 65,000 People Rode Shuttles Around Metro Closures

In case it wasn't obvious when you boarded the Metrorail system this morning, WMATA says it did indeed finish up that major rail interlocking replacement and bridge work that saw three Metro stations on the Green and Yellow lines closed for the entire three-day weekend. Also notable: Metro counted 64,228 people who took advantage of the free shuttle buses that were moving riders around the closures. That figure is just shy of the 68,000 or so who used the shuttles during the similar Labor Day weekend closures. more ›

Labor Day Metro Work Completed, But More Closures to Come

WMATA announced today it completed the work it intended to do during this past holiday weekend, work which forced the complete closure of three Metro stations, including National Airport, Pentagon City and Crystal City. Metro's track workers replaced four track switches at the Pentagon City station, along with 2,000 feet of rail and more than 735 ties. They also performed repairs along the National Airport station's aerial structure, conducted fire line maintenance and installed cable to upgrade cell phone service at those stations. more ›

Labor Day Weekend Metro Station Closures to Proceed

Labor Day Weekend Metro Station Closures to Proceed

Despite the hubbub that initially came pouring out of Metro's board this week after WMATA announced it would close three Metro stations, including the one that serves National Airport, for the entire Labor Day holiday weekend, the closures are set to go into effect tonight at 9:30 p.m. A majority of the board got on the phone with Metro General Manager John Catoe last night for a conference call (a seekrit conference call!), and the consensus is reportedly that they agree with the decision to do the major track work in question this weekend (Labor Day, it turns out, is one of the slowest holiday weekends for WMATA), but are now pledging to make sure the public is given more notice before anything like this happens again. more ›

Weekend Track Maintenance Schedule Altered

Weekend Track Maintenance Schedule Altered

At the beginning of the month, WMATA scheduled some pretty heavy track maintenance along two points on the Red Line for this weekend. But as you might imagine, Monday's accident means all weekend track work on the Red Line has been cancelled. The work will be rescheduled sometime later, but in the meantime, Red Line trains continue to single track between Takoma and Fort Totten during rush hour today, with plans about Red Line access along that stretch still yet to be announced for the weekend. more ›
